Exposing New Age (occult/hidden) Teachings
Compiled by Chris Lawson, Updated July 31, 2025
An Introductory Statement (short article) is at the bottom of this page, below the 2008 entries.
This video is on the homepage of our SRN sister site SpiritJournaling.com. This website deals with the potential dangers of "journaling" methods and the dangers of psychic and spirtistic practices, in the church and in the world. This video above also expresses a lengthy concern about Sarah Young's Jesus Calling Series. Suggested resources are also mentioned. See also our article, Is 'Jesus Calling' or is Jesus Warning?: Names of "spirits" masquerading as "guides" and "deceased loved ones".
The Bestselling Christian Daily Devotional Jesus Calling
The New York Times bestselling Christian daily devotional Jesus Calling by Sarah Young contains New Age buzzwords, extra-biblical names, pagan concepts, false teachings, and clairaudient (channeling/“clear hearing”) messages from a false Christ (spirit guide). When examining the entire multi-devotional Jesus Calling series as a whole, an elaborate integrated message system containing hidden (occult) teachings is exposed.
In summary, the Jesus Calling series is a “Christianized” training manual for clairaudient/clairvoyant mediumship (spiritism). Presented to a Christian audience and beyond, devoted Jesus Calling fans can be deceived into contacting the spirit world, thinking it is the “Jesus” of the Bible they are in conversation with. But don’t take our word for it. You should examine the irrefutable evidence presented by Sarah Young’s false Christ spirit guide. It is he who ascribes to himself the name “Jesus” and many pagan names and titles alike. Furthermore, it is he who speaks for himself--through Sarah Young. She claims she receives these messages from him! The proof is in Sarah Young’s books and millions of people are under the mistaken impression that it is the biblical Jesus Calling.
If this beginning paragraph seems a bit too much, you can further validate your concerns and the concerns of many committed Christians by searching these key phrases on the Internet: "Jesus Calling deception," "Jesus Calling false teaching," "Jesus Calling heresy," "deception calling," "Sarah Young false teacher," "Sarah Young deception," "Sarah Young Another Jesus Calling," and "God Calling and Jesus Calling."

- Posted text below is the Blog Post and Letter, linked above:
Dear Christian Leader:
Sarah Young’s perennial best-selling book, Jesus Calling, has sold over 15 million copies since it was first published in 2004. It continues to be enthusiastically read around the world and is available in over 20 different editions in English alone. With the book more popular than ever, there are entire Sarah Young’ sections in Christian bookstores that feature Jesus Calling and other related products. Sadly, most Christian leaders are either unaware of the book’s serious problems or are just choosing to stay away from the growing controversy surrounding Jesus Calling. Whatever the case, few, if any, warnings are being issued by those in Christian leadership.
In case you happened to be unaware of the problems involving Jesus Calling, we have enclosed our recently published Lighthouse Trails booklet titled 10 Scriptural Reasons Why Jesus Calling is a Dangerous Book. Hopefully, it will help you to understand why Sarah Young’s book is such a threat to the spiritual well-being of today’s church.
Sincerely in Christ,

Redefining Jesus Christ - The Biblical Jesus versus the Counterfeits

INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT
The Jesus Calling Devotional Series - A closer look at Sarah Young's New Age/Occult teachings
By Chris Lawson
Jesus Calling and Sarah Young's entire Jesus Calling devotional series contain much more than meets the eye. The compiled research material and links here on the Spiritual Research Network website reveal this in precise detail.
As you begin to investigate the problems with Jesus Calling, you too will see a spiritual language (terms, concepts, names, buzzwords) that has been craftily embedded into the Jesus Calling devotional series. This spiritual language from Sarah Young and the spirit that is influencing her (that refers to itself as "Jesus") are foreign to sound biblical theology.
Here you can find out about the dangerous meditative/contemplative prayer method that Sarah Young has engaged in, in order to produce "journals" that she claims come from the actual guidance, inspiration and words of "Jesus" himself. As can be proven in various ways, this is nothing more than literary penmanship inspired by the spirit world, influencing and speaking to and through Sarah Young (via scribing Jesus Calling material). This is not the "Jesus Christ" of the Bible speaking to Sarah Young. Listen here, Jesus Calling Messages Compared to Channeled Spirit Messages - New Age "Messages": Sarah Young's Contemplative Prayer Method Identical to Passive, Telepathic-Psychic Literary Mediumship!
Many spiritistic/psychic channelers claim that "Jesus" speaks through them, however their non-Christian occult belief systems and principles are shown forth in the written communications that are published. We believe Sarah Young's "Jesus" is similar in nature, but with much craftier intent and with more beguiling terminology, terminology that has been heavily fused with Scripture. The end result is the subtle indoctrination and deception of millions of undiscerning Christians.
When examining the details in-depth, it is a matter of fact that Sarah Young's "Jesus" refuses to identify himself as the "Lord Jesus Christ" of Nazareth. Not only this, Sarah Young's "Jesus" gives many "names, titles, and descriptors" of himself that are far from biblical. One colleague of mine has noted that, "In the Jesus Calling series (for adults), Sarah Young’s “Jesus” refers to himself with hundreds of different names, titles, and descriptors, using variations on common biblical names such as Christ, Creator, God, Helper, King, Lamb, Lord, Redeemer, Rock, Savior, and Shepherd. However, he completely avoids other familiar names and titles: Advocate, High Priest, Jesus Christ, Jesus of Nazareth, Mediator, Servant, Son of David, Son of God, Son of Man. Instead, he opts for creative names that are not in the Bible but can be found in mythology, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Theosophy, New Thought, New Age, psychic literature, and modern culture…" See the article, Extra Biblical Names in the Jesus Calling Series.
Furthermore, Sarah Young's "Jesus" speaks of many unbiblical concepts that are foreign to Scripture. One fellow researcher states, "The Jesus Calling Series appears to draw from sources outside of Christianity for many of its ideas and metaphors: 5th Dimension, Attention Bridge, Between Trapezes, Bubbling Thoughts, Carrying the Calm, Golden Cord, Light-Bearers, Living on Two Planes, Maximizing Your Potential, Mind Like Water, Monkey Mind, Multiple Brain Tracks, Negative Thought Patterns, Positive Focus, Present Moment Awareness, Self-Forgetfulness, Thought Forms, ‘Treasure House, Gold Mine Within, I Am,’ True Self. These twenty-one terms are expanded below with quotations from Buddhism, Hinduism, Theosophy, New Thought, New Age, Psychology, Neuroscience, Hypnotism, mythology, classic poetry, psychic literature, inspirational literature, and the Jesus Calling Series." See the article, Extra-Biblical Concepts in the Jesus Calling Series.
Preferring to mix many biblical names and titles of God with numerous unbiblical concepts and many names and titles and ascriptions from pagan, cultic and occult belief systems, it is very clear that Sarah Young's "Jesus" is hostile to the biblical Jesus of Nazareth, the Lord God of eternity.
Our SRN archive page can also refer you to well-documented information about the Jesus Calling damage control and textual changes made by Sarah Young's publisher, Thomas Nelson Publishers (see, Changing "Jesus Calling"—Damage Control for a False). Sarah Young's publisher advertises this way — “Thomas Nelson Publishers | Everything Christian For Less,” and “Thomas Nelson is a world leading publisher and provider of Christian content, with over 250 new, original books and Bibles published each year.” One wonders why Thomas Nelson Publishers and Sarah Young don't publicly apologize for playing fast-and-loose with God's Word.
The research material here will also help you see the truth that when combined together, all of the Jesus Calling devotional series books—as an integrated body of literature—are a training course in New Age philosophy (The New Age Implications of “Jesus Calling”) and practical mediumship (see, Training Manual for Mediums? - Quotations from the God Calling Books and the Jesus Calling Series).
But who would ever imagine these things to be so? The Jesus Calling series is filled with Bible verses, and Sarah Young claims to be a Christian, and Thomas Nelson Publishers publishes mountains of Christian literature —right? Indeed, right!
But Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the risen Lord Jesus Christ, whom Sarah Young's "Jesus" is theologically and philosophically contrary to, warned,
“And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many….And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many….Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not…For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.” (Matthew 24:4-5,11,23-26, KJV)
We suggest you begin your personal investigation into these matters with the resources and links we have provided, and work from there to our audio and video material. See also our extensive SRN Jesus Calling Expose' page on our former SRN website (WayBack Machine) for excellent research materials from numerous sources (first link below). As you examine the compiled documentation and work through the biblical refutations of the Jesus Calling series, it will become very clear that there is irrefutable evidence proving that Sarah Young's "Jesus" is indeed a deceiving spirit.
“Now the [Holy] Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils [demons]; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron…” (1 Timothy 4:1-2)
“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” (2 Timothy 4:1-4, KJV)

Chris Lawson
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try [test] the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”
